In Ethiopia, GIZ has been working for more than 40 years in bilateral cooperation on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and on the commission of the Ethiopian government and international donors. GIZ Ethiopia is looking to recruit a GIS-Trainee for the Biodiversity and Forest programme as specified below.

 

              Position: GIS-Trainee

              Place of Work: Addis Ababa

              Remuneration: as per the GIZ scale

Tasks in General:

§  Jointly undertaking of wildlife species and habitat monitoring studies

§  Onsite coaching of park staff on species and habitat monitoring tools and methods (e.g. Desktop GIS/Mobile GIS, GPS, Camera Traps, etc).

§  In compliance with the ecological monitoring standards and protocol developed by the consulting company - the Institute for Ecology (E.C.O.) company maintain the databases in Nech Sar and Borena Sayint Worehimeno NPs.

§  Establish a database in Chebera Churchura NP based on the E.C.O. standards

§  Support capacity building efforts in database management and analysis

§  Preparing park management base maps

Tasks in Detail

·         Monitoring and mapping works

§  To make a collection of available maps and data

§  To collect data or verify on the ground with GPS about major park management features and attractions

·         Establishing and maintaining databases

§  Maintain the ecological monitoring database established by ECO in NS and BSW NPs

§  Establish a monitoring system for CCNP based on ECO standards

·            Capacity building

§  Participate and support capacity building efforts in areas of ecological monitoring and database maintenance

·         Mapping activities in collaboration with key experts in each park:

§  Develop a standard layout for mapping

§  Develop base maps on A0, A3 and A4 formats

§  Develop species specific abundance and distribution maps focusing on selected flagship species per park

§  Support mapping needs of the General Management Plan development in BSW and Hallaydeghe NPs

§  Acquire and process land use land cover changes for each park based on Sentinel 2 data

§  Analyse, interpret and present in maps the data collected by camera traps and from vegetation monitoring plots

To work with the Programme according to needs and interests

·         To work occasionally with the programme

·         To learn the programme work at least in one of the other topics, the programme addresses

Job Requirements

Qualifications required

·         The candidate must have BSc or higher in Geographic Information System, Geography, Ecology and Ecosystem Modelling.

·         Should have skills in using technologies and methods for Biodiversity and Habitat Monitoring (e.g. GIS (ArcGIS, QGIS, GPS, Camera Trap).

·         S/He should speak very good English and must be interested to work as a pair with an international trainee with a willingness to share skills and experiences to staff of target national parks.
